 Training Camp – Fall 2008

The Laconia Leafs have been fortunate to have 2 hockey stars train with them this fall.  Former UNH star, and current Springfield Falcon (AHL) Derek Bekar, as well as Former Leaf, and recent Johnson Wales University graduate, Matt McGilvray have taken to the ice in Laconia.

“Both of these players are heading off to their respective pro teams soon, and we invited them to participate in our practices & training sessions,” said Leafs Coach and General Manager Will Fay.

“Having these guys on ice, with their skill, passion & experience, is like having a dozen coaches. They both play a very simple game, so they are a great example, on and off the ice, for our team.” added Fay.

Bekar is heading off to Springfield, MA next week, to begin his 11th pro season. Prior to this season Bekar has had playing stints in Europe, the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL, as well as the Los Angeles kings of the NHL.

“It’s been a great opportunity for me to skate with Leafs this year. Coach Fay and his staff run a great practice, and the players work hard, giving me an advantage heading into my upcoming season” Bekar commented.

McGilvray was a former Leafs League All-star, and upon attending Johnson & Wales University, quickly established himself as a dominant player in the ECAC Northeast league. McGilvray was ECAC rookie of the year in his freshman campaign, led the team & league in scoring 3 years, was an all-league player, and garnered the prestigious ECAC player of the year award as a senior. McGilvray is off to the Fresno Falcons of the East Coast Hockey League, the top AA affiliate of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks.

“As a Leafs Alumni, it’s always to great to come back to Laconia and see the people that were part of my experience here. The competitive nature of the practices have prepared me well for my future in pro hockey” said McGilvray
