Laconia Leafs head coach Will Fay announced today that
Matt Lawrence (Exeter, NH) has been named as team captain for the 2008-09 ice hockey team as voted on by the players and selected by the coaches.
"Matt has displayed many leadership qualities both on and off the ice in this early season period," Fay said. "What impresses me the most, is that Matt hasn’t played in over 6 weeks (rib injury), yet, has still provided a tremendous amount of maturity and a team first attitude."
Lawrence, a Defenseman who helped lead Berwick Academy to the New England Division II prep playoffs last season, is one of 23 new players on the 2008-09 Leafs roster.
"It’s a big honor to be named captain of the Laconia Leafs," Lawrence said. Being a captain of this team brings a big responsibility. I am very excited to lead the team to a great season." “I plan to approach things one game at a time, and to be consistent with coach Fay’s philosophy” said Matt. We are planning for a great season, and with basically an entirely new team, I expect to help with the adjustments we all need to make to improve upon last season’s record. It looks like we are on the verge of something special in Laconia, and with the able support of my assistant captains, we expect to become a playoff caliber team” added Lawrence.
Joining Matt as team leaders are assistants at home games;
Steve Gallo (Barnstead, NH) and
John Lineberry (Henniker, NH), and at way games;
Aaron Fleming (Merritt Island, FL) and
Jason Olson (Rutland, VT).
"I am really honored to be selected as an assistant captain," Fleming said. Being a captain requires a lot of the behind the scenes work and it means a lot to me that the coaches & team feel I can take that role. I know I am speaking for all the leaders, and am thoroughly excited for this season and expect a lot from this group."
Laconia’s first home game vs the Portland Pirates, is on Saturday, October 25th at 6:30 p.m. at the Laconia Ice Arena, followed by a Sunday tilt vs the CT Wolfpack at 2:30pm.
