Leafs announce...30 former Players on College & pro rosters this week!

The Laconia Leafs announce in February 2010 that 30 Alumni are currently competing on College, University and Professional teams across the nation for the 2009-2010 season. The alumni are currently competing in leagues such as the ECAC East, ECAC DI, ECAC West, ECAC Northeast, MASCAC , MCHA, IJHL & SPHL.
The Leafs alumni continue to succeed in their athletic careers while studying at post-secondary institutes across North America.
The Atlantic Junior Hockey League continues to be one of the premier developmental Leagues in the United States for student-athletes striving to capitalize on their athletic and academic abilities. By choosing to play in Laconia a player is joining a family of athletes spanning over 13 years of athletic and academic excellence. Our student-athletes’ achievements both academically and athletically have been made possible through their choice to play junior hockey in the AJHL.

Prior to Colgate: Played one year for the Kemptville 73’s of the CJHL … Registered six goals and eight assists for 14 points in 57 games for Rod Simmons … Graduated from Gilmour Academy (Gates Mills, Ohio) in 2006 … Played for the Laconia Leafs of the AJHL, where he posted 12 goals and 23 assists in 40 games.

2008-09: Second player in program history to be named ECAC Men’s West Conference Rookie of the Year … Named to the conference’s All-Rookie Team … Led the conference
in rookie scoring with 21 points on seven goals and 14 assists in 15 conference games played … Led the entire conference in overall scoring after posting 37 points (17 goals, 20 assists) in 25 games played, good for an average of 1.48 points per game… 37 points in a single season ranks fourth on the College’s all-time single season scoring list … Tied 2008 Pioneer Hall of Fame inductee Jimmy Sokol for second place on the
College’s all-time single-season goal scoring list with 17 goals ... Named the conference’s rookie of the week five times and earned conference player of the week twice … Netted a team-best three game-winning goals.

Withers has played three years in the SPHL. Prior to the SPHL, Withers played four years in the NCAA starting with The Laconia Leafs JR Team, The University of Southern Maine and finishing with Plymouth State University. After his college career Withers started his professional career with the Jacksonville Barracudas. During his 2007-2008 season with the Knoxville Ice Bears, Withers and the Ice Bears won the Presidents Cup (Playoffs) and the William B. Coffey Trophy (Regular season). However his personal best season came in 2008-2009 with the Richmond Renegades where he recorded 4 goals, 4 assists and 103 minutes in penalties.

This is his third pro season, his first in the IHL and with the Lumberjacks. Played his initial two pro seasons in the ECHL with the Wheeling Nailers, including the latter club’s division title timber season of last year. His best pro season came in his first pro campaign in 2007-08 when he collected 8-points in 57-games on 2-goals, 6-assists while accruing 79-PIM. Previous to pro career, played his JR Hockey with the Laconia Leafs, then enjoyed an outstanding four-year collegiate career at Sacred Heart U. where in 125-career games, authored 21-points on 1-goal, 20-assists and 236-PIM. Signed by Muskegon as a free agent on 9/16/09.
