Colgate Adds Laconia Leaf to Men’s Hockey Class of 2012

HAMILTON, N.Y. (6/19/08) – The Colgate University men’s hockey team  added two more student-athletes to its Class of 2012, head coach Don Vaughan announced on Thursday, June 19. Goaltender Bryan Bessette (Melrose, N.Y.) and forward Mark Nasca (Chagrin Falls, Ohio - Laconia Leafs, AJHL) are the seventh and eighth additions to the Raiders for next season.

Nasca is a 5-foot-8, 165-pound winger who played the 2007-08 season with the Kemptville 73’s of the CJHL. He skated in 57 games, and contributed 14 points on six goals and eight assists, including one shorthanded goal, along with 59 penalty minutes. Before joining Kemptville, Nasca played for the Laconia Leafs of the Atlantic Junior Hockey League in 2006-2007.

“Mark is a high-energy player with a tremendous work ethic,” Dickson said. “What Mark gives up in size he makes up for with passion and effort. He’s an excellent skater who will hound the puck and be tough to play against.”

Bessette and Nasca will join incoming freshmen Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.), Matt Firman (Fayetteville, N.Y.), Corbin McPherson (Folsom, Calif.), Nicholas Prockow (Montreal, Que.), and Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas), as well as transfer student Adam Corrin (Winnipeg, Man.), who will be a junior, on the Raider roster next season.

Former Leaf - Coffman Garners more awards at Utica

ECAC WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Utica, NY (Dec. 16, 2008) – Freshman stand out Tim Coffman (Laconia Leafs (AJHL)/Elverson, PA) of the Utica College men’s hockey team was named ECAC Men’s West Conference Player of the Week Tuesday for the second time this season. In five out of eight weeks this year Coffman has earned either player of the week (two) or rookie of the week (three) honors for his outstanding play on the ice.

Coffman netted a hat-trick and added an assist in the Pioneers' 7-1 win over visiting Western New England College Friday night. He currently ranks fourth in the nation with 23 points on 13 goals and 10 assists. The 5-foot-11 forward also leads the nation in rookie scoring with 23 points. He needs just five more goals in the second semester to tie the college's all-time single season goal scoring record (18) set by Jon Ames in 2003-04.

The Pioneers snapped a three game winless streak on Friday and they are now 7-4-2 on the year. Utica returns to action on Jan. 9 when they host Geneseo State for a non-conference match up at 7 p.m. Live stats for the contest will be available at www.ucpioneers.com. Live video will be streaming on the web at video.fasthockey.com.

Lawrence University Vikings freshman forward Ben DiMarco (Galvestan, Tex.)

Ben earned his second MCHA Freshman of the Week honor for his play against Northland this past weekend. He scored two goals in each game, highlighted by being credited for the game-winner each contest. The economics major netted his pair of goals in just a 14-second span Friday.

John Cahalane Notches Hat-Trick to Lead Worcester State Comeback!

Worcester State 7, WNEC 6

Auburn, MA --- Freshman center John Cahalane (Laconia Leafs - AJHL) scored a hat-trick including two goals in the final three minutes to help spark Worcester State's 7-6 come-from-behind win over Western New England College in non-conference men's hockey action this evening at Horgan Memorial Rink.

After first-year Joe Deputla (Anchorage, AK) made it a 6-4 Golden Bear lead with 15 minutes left to play, the Lancers (3-4) started their comeback at 15:26 on a marker by sophomore Kris Metea (Taunton, MA). Less than 30 seconds later, junior classmates Andy Orsini (Rochester, NY) and Tom Pappa (Oswego, NY) each notched helpers on the second of Cahalane's two goals to score the equalizer.

With less than 26 seconds left to play in the game, Orsini and junior Lee Belisle (Chicopee, MA) found Cahalane to score the game-winning goal to complete the WSC comeback.

Both teams will resume play after the Thanksgiving break. Worcester State will visit Salem State on Monday at 7 PM while the Golden Bears will host Franklin Pierce on Tuesday at 7:20.

McGilvray Named ECAC Northeast Player of the Year

Leafs Alumni Honored

JWU Hockey Standout Matt McGilvray was recently Named ECAC Northeast Player of the Year.

Providence, R.I. – Johnson & Wales senior Matt McGilvray (Laconia Leafs/Rochester, N.H.) was named the 2007-08 ECAC Northeast Hockey League Player of the Year, announced by the conference office on Thursday evening.

McGilvray is making his fourth appearance on the All-ECAC Northeast team.  This year, he led the team and the conference in scoring with 28 goals and 20 assists for 48 points.  That total ranked him fifth nationally in points per game at 1.9.  A standout in the classroom, he has also been an ECAC Academic All-Star every season in a JWU uniform.

“Over the last four years, Matt has been our leader in every offensive category,” said head coach Erik Noack.  “He’s been a leader on and off the ice for us during his entire career.  Hopefully this will lead to some other accolades for him.”

McGilvray considered D-II Saint Anselm and New England College. But there is no national tournament in D-II, so Saint A's was out, and at NEC, the way the coach recruits players in waves, McGilvray wasn't sure if he would play. JWU offered the opportunity to come in and play immediately.

"He's a bright kid, so a lot of the NESCAC schools missed the boat on him," coach Noack said. "I can't believe we got him."

McGilvray isn't through with hockey. Several professional teams came knocking during his senior season, but none offered the right situation for him to leave school early. Once he graduates, he figures to focus on getting into the pro ranks.
